I was at the beach over the school holidays and I watched a group of young children making some Wombat Stew!
The author, Marcia K Vaughn, uses all of a children’s book author’s key ingredients to create this childhood favourite. Rhythm, onomatopoeia, repetition, fun and imagery are all wrapped up with a group of Australian animals brought to life by illustrator, Pamela Lofts.
Big blops of billabong mud
Dingo catches a Wombat and begins to make Wombat Stew. It’s up to all of the other bush animals to try and trick clever Dingo out of his meal.
Up through the red dust popped Echidna.
The illustrations of the animals are realistic and although they are personified through speech, I think this book has much to offer young children.
